Current accreditation mechanisms for CE are unnecessarily complex yet insufficiently rigorous. Compared to earlier, formal stages of health professions education, the CE enterprise is fragmented, poorly regulated, and uncoordinated; as a result, CE is highly variable in quality and poorly aligned with efforts to improve quality and enhance health outcomes.The report also includes some strong statements about commercial support of CME. Ouch...Macy Foundation Issues Report on CME
The Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation held a conference this past November on continuing education in the health professions and just published their findings. An excerpt from their report:

What was posted was the Chairman's summary and not the complete report. But it sure has stirred up the CME troops. We all anticipate publication of the entire report, especially the data used to support the wide ranging recommendations. But dialog around the recommendations does not have to wait for the report. These are important recommendations that deserve continuing careful deliberation.
